What is the day like?

Campers are dropped off between 8:15am and 8:45pm. at The Door Youth Center.  The bus leaves for Pitman’s Bay by 8:50am.  On the first day campers are placed in age-appropriate groups of no more than 10 to 12 campers.  Our staff and volunteers supervise the Bible Discovery, waterfront and various activities throughout the day. The bus returns to Huntsville by 4:30pm for parental pick up.  Staff will be on duty at The Door until 5;15pm.  Parents please note—If you will be detained picking up your camper, please let our staff know in advance.

If you camper is permitted to walk home or to  your place of work, please let us know.  Should your camper be absent from camp for any reason please contact us.  We do take attendance daily.

Is your waterfront safe?

Our waterfront area is cordoned off for safe swimming, and our waterfront staff are qualified Lifeguards.  We use the “buddy system” during swimming activities.  Buddy checks will take place at intervals throughout the swimming period, at the discretion of the Lifeguards.  Campers are also instructed in proper waterfront emergency procedures at the beginning of each week, Every camper will be “evaluated” on their swimming ability. This will determine what swimming areas the camper will be permitted to use.  They will receive a colored lanyard worn on the wrist at all times.  Our criteria is as follows: Level 1, non-swimmer—may use shallow end of waterfront and beach area but MUST have a staff member with them to use canoes or paddle boat.  Level 2—camper must be able to swim 2 lengths of swimming area any stroke + tread water for 3 minutes.  Level 2 campers may use canoes and the paddle boat.  Level 3 campers must be able to swim 4 lengths of swimming area + tread water 5 minutes. Level 3 campers may use all water craft + raft + cliff jumping. The buddy system still applies regardless of swimming level.  All campers must wear a lifejacket when using any water craft.

NOTE: one length of our swimming area is 25 meters or approximately one pool length.
