What is the day like?

Campers are dropped off between 8:15am and 8:45am at The Door Youth Centre.  The bus leaves for Pitman’s Bay by 9:00am.  On the first day campers are placed in age-appropriate groups of no more than 10 to 15 campers.  Our staff and volunteers supervise the Bible Discovery, waterfront and various activities throughout the day. The bus returns to Huntsville by 4:45pm for parental pick up.  Staff will be on duty at The Door until 5:15pm.  Parents please note—If you will be detained picking up your camper, please let our staff know in advance.

What do I do when I arrive with my camper?

Sign in!  Each morning when you arrive we ask you to sign in your camper to our care.  Should you choose to have an alternate adult drop off or pick up your camper, we ask that you inform us in writing.  No camper will be permitted to leave Kidmax Day Camp without being signed out by the adult responsible for their care. If your camper is permitted to walk home or to your place of work, please let us know.  Should your camper be absent from camp for any reason please contact us.

What does my child need for the day?

Swim suit, towel, refillable water bottle, hat and sunscreen, lunch & drinks, extra clothes in case they get wet or the weather turns cool. Flip-flops or sandals are good for the beach but make sure they also have shoes for running and hiking.

Please do not bring: Electronic devices, any items of sentimental or monetary value (we don’t want them to get lost or broken).

Important: please be sure to pack nut-free lunches and snacks!

Is your waterfront safe?

Our waterfront area is cordoned off for safe swimming, and our waterfront staff are qualified Lifeguards.  We use the Buddy System during swimming activities, and buddy checks will take place at intervals throughout the swimming period.  Staff and campers are also instructed in proper waterfront emergency procedures. Every camper will be evaluated on their swimming ability, which will determine what swimming areas the camper is permitted to use.  They will receive a coloured lanyard worn on the wrist at all times.  Our evaluation criteria are as follows:

  • Level 1 — (non-swimmers) — must stay within the roped area of waterfront and beach; must have a staff member with them to use canoes and/or surfboards.
  • Level 2 — camper must be able to swim 2 lengths of swimming area (any stroke) + tread water for 3 minutes.  Level 2 must stay within the roped area of waterfront and beach; may use canoes and surfboards with their swim buddy.
  • Level 3 campers must be able to swim 4 lengths of swimming area + tread water 5 minutes. Level 3 campers may use canoes, kayaks, surfboards, and the floating raft (located just outside of the roped off area).

The buddy system still applies regardless of swimming level.  All campers must wear a lifejacket when using any water craft.

NOTE: one length of our swimming area is 25 meters or approximately one pool length.

Our kayak program is run under the supervision and instruction of Muskoka Kayak School.

May I come for a visit?

YES.  We welcome parents to drop by any time throughout the week.

We also extend an invitation to you, along with other family members and friends,  to our FREE barbeque held Thursdays beginning at 4:00 p.m.  Simply RSVP at The Door with our staff.  We provide the drinks, hot dogs, hamburgers, and condiments (salads and desserts are pot luck).  The waterfront will be open for free swim until just before dinner approximately 5:30 pm. Campers are welcome to stay at Pitman’s Bay where they will be supervised until you arrive.  Be sure to let our staff and your camper know if this is what you would like them to do. This will avoid confusion before the bus departs for the return to Huntsville.

Please note that the barbeque may be cancelled due to inclement weather or low attendance.

What if I need to get in touch with my camper or the staff?

If your camper will be absent or you need to get in touch with them for any reason we can be reached at The Door (705-789-4748) between 8:00 and 8:45 am, or leave a message.  The camp director's cell number will also be provided to you in case you need to contact camp staff while they are at Pitman's Bay.
